Adapting The Library
Location: Borrowstounness (Bo’Ness), Falkirk
Year: 2021
The existing fabric of the building comprises of the original 17th Century warehouse and tavern, with a 1980’s extension added to connect the two older parts.
By stripping back the 80’s extension and expanding the library through a vertical stack, the proposal suggests a new landmark for the town of Bo’Ness.
An auditorium sits atop the proposal, emerging from the building on two monolithic concrete columns. There is a strong dialogue between light and heavy; the solidity of the concrete is juxtaposed with the permeability of the building’s skin. A perforated canopy covers the lane between the library and the immediate adjacent buildings, creating a convivial place to meet and gather in the town.
