EASA 2027 Bid
Gallus

Year: 2025

Presented at INCM Resonate - Zaļenieki, Latvia

Ryan Woods & Iris Maria Tudor

A thematic and contextual film developed as part of EASA Scotland’s bid to host the 47th European Architecture Students’ Assembly in 2027.

In Scots, particularly common in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, “Gallus” refers to an act or person that is cheeky, mischievous, bold or daring - often used to describe someone doing something they shouldn’t, but can also signify a positive, stylish or exemplary act.

Historically, the word had negative connotations, referencing someone “fit for the gallows”, but its usage has evolved to be more positive in contemporary terminology.

By drawing on synonyms from both the Scots and Gaelic languages, the bid reframed Gallus as an attitude for navigating confrontation and bias within architectural education and practice. The theme positioned friction as something generative rather than reductive, emphasising the growing need for cross-party discourse in an increasingly charged socio-political climate.
